The Claims of Jesus Christ
... to be the Savior of all.
Early in John's Gospel, in His conversation with a Jewish religious leader, Jesus claims that the way to God requires that one be born again and goes on to make this amazing statement about Himself:
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged, he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." (John 3:1-l8).
Jesus' claim that only through Him can we hope to be saved for eternity is a recurrent theme throughout John's Gospel.
... to be the giver of eternal life.
In another instance, Jesus Christ begins His testimony about Himself while talking with a woman drawing water from a well:
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life" (John 4:10,13&14)
"If you only knew who it is who says to you..." Jesus went on to claim that He is the giver of eternal life. This is something only God Himself can do. (see also John 6:22)
